M & K’s Epic Winter Elopement in Sedona

One of my favorite parts of being an elopement photographer is bringing a couple’s vision to life. Sometimes, the process is a breeze—they have a clear picture of what they want, and I’m just there to make the magic happen. It’s a testament to their thoughtful planning and excitement, and I’m thrilled to help execute their plans.

Other times, it feels like catching lightning in a bottle. Our conversations spark ideas that lead to something even more enchanting than they imagined!

Megan and Kyle are an adventure-loving duo from northern Utah, and their love story started with a modern twist—a swipe on Bumble. Kyle was on the lookout for someone who could match his adventurous spirit, and when he came across Megan’s profile, he was instantly drawn to her beautiful blue eyes and playful snowboard antics. Their first date at Powder Mountain was a whirlwind of snow and laughter. Megan was immediately impressed by Kyle’s riding style and his laid-back vibe. Little did they know, that snowy day was just the beginning of a lifetime of adventures together—complete with cozy nights filled with tacos and laughter. Her smile melted his heart, and he knew they were beginning something special. For Megan, it was seeing Kyle’s joyful laughter during a laid-back afternoon with friends that made her realize he was the one.

As we talked, they mentioned wanting to elope in Moab. Megan, who grew up around the gorgeous red rocks of Sedona, felt a connection to the desert. But as we dove deeper into what mattered most about their big day, it became clear their hearts were calling them elsewhere.

So, we switched things up and decided to head south instead! That’s right—we ditched the original Moab plan and just like that, we were Arizona bound! It was time for a winter elopement in Sedona. Wahooooo!!!

This is what I love about working with my elopement couples. We quickly move beyond the surface and connect on a deeper level, uncovering the true essence of what they want to feel and remember about their special day. It feels like pure magic, setting aside logistics to focus on what’s most important.

After all, an elopement shouldn’t just be about filling your day with activities to check off a list. It’s about honoring your unique connection—a bond that will carry you through life together. Can you think of a more beautiful way to start your next chapter?

As we arrived in Sedona—a place I lived in for two winters—I was excited. I had gone down a few days early to scope out some prime sunset spots (with some mountain biking on my favorite trails, of course). I thrive on spontaneity, but I also believe in having an intentional game plan.

The day before the ceremony, I met Megan at her family home in Oak Creek. She showed me around, including the creek that runs through the property, and it was easy to see why Sedona called to them—and to me! We walked to the state park to scope out the perfect spot for their ceremony, excitedly chatting, and settled on the perfect spot. We went over a few details, including specific shots they wanted, and then parted ways for the evening.

Before we knew it, the big day had arrived, and we made the most of it!

I encourage a playful energy in my elopement sessions, and these two needed no prompting. At one point, Megan stood by the fireplace in her family home—where she had played as a girl—her eyes sparkling as we recreated a photo her parents took years ago. In that moment, I could see the spontaneous little girl she once was growing into the adventurous woman she is today.

After that, we ventured into the natural surroundings of Oak Creek Canyon for their ceremony. The crisp white snow blanketing the striking red rocks hushed the canyon as we approached an alcove. Surrounded by towering cottonwoods and the sound of a gentle wind blowing through them, Megan and Kyle stood hand in hand, reading their vows with expressive glances and joy lighting up their faces, all officiated by their best friend.

Experiences like these reaffirm why I enjoy what I do. It’s not just about snapping pictures; it’s about capturing love as it is in this moment. Each click of my camera is bearing witness to a unique love story unfolding—one my couples will cherish forever.

In unique Sedona fashion, after the ceremony we emerged from the canyon, hiking through red rocks on our way to a beautiful desert sunset. (With a coat, of course.) As the winter sun dipped low in the sky, we hiked to a scenic overlook to soak in the ethereal beauty of Sedona. As golden hour faded, they sealed the occasion with a celebratory toast of whiskey and a kiss.

And just like that, their desert elopement vision became a reality, with incredible memories captured in photos to reflect on forever as they step into this new chapter of life together.

Cheers to Megan and Kyle!!
