What to Wear for Your Moab Couples Session
A Style Guide for Looking and Feeling Your Best in the Desert
Planning a couples photo session in Moab? First of all — HELL YES. Whether you’re here for an engagement session, or just a wild-hearted getaway with your person, I’m already stoked for you. Moab’s dramatic desert landscape makes an unforgettable backdrop, but your outfits … that’s what we are here to talk about.
So let’s chat about what to wear for your Moab couples session — what works, what to skip, and how to feel confident, comfy, and totally yourself from head to hiking boots.

First Things First: Wear Something That Feels Like You
This is your loventure — not a fashion catalog (unless you want it to be). If you never wear dresses, don’t feel like you have to just because you saw one flowing on Instagram. If you love bold colors, wear them. You don’t have to stick with earth tones unless that’s your thing (even though I do recommend them). That said, I love a good pop of color in the desert — it can totally steal the show.
AND if you’ve been dreaming about a look you saw online and you want to step a little outside your comfort zone, do it! This is your moment to play, to express, and to celebrate. There’s no right or wrong here, just what feels exciting and true for you.
When you’re picking outfits, here are a few magic-making questions to ask yourself:
Can I move in this? (Jump, spin, sit on the rock, cuddle up in it?)
Do I feel like myself? (Or like a version of myself I want to be?)
Do I want something casual, fancy, or somewhere in between?
Your Outfit Can Match Your Adventure
Drive-Up Sessions
Dreaming of that big, bold, windswept-dress moment? YES PLEASE. A dramatic dress absolutely shines in photos, especially when the setting is just as epic. And lucky you... Moab is packed with drive-up spots that are basically made for this kind of magic. Some of my favorites:
Dead Horse Point – Hands down one of the best canyon views in Moab, especially at sunset. You’ll feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world (in the best way).
The Windows Area in Arches National Park – Total “best bang for your buck” vibes. You’re surrounded by those famous red rock formations, and it’s so easy to get to. (Bonus: It’s the first place I ever visited in Moab when I was 23 — so it’s got a special place in my heart.)
Drive-up locations make it easy to go big on your outfit while keeping the logistics chill. So if you’re eyeing that dramatic dress moment, this might be your sign.
Hike-In Sessions
These are for the adventure lovers who have a little more time (and love a trail moment). Some of my favorite hike-in locations (that I’m permitted for!):
Trails at Dead Horse Point State Park
Corona Arch on public land – this is a stunning trail with a few fun, unique details (like a ladder!) for some fun photo moments.
For the adventure lovers who have a little mbore time, you can:
Wear your hiking outfit the whole time (bonus if it’s a brand-new one you treat yourself to!)
Or bring a second outfit (like a formal dress or something elevated) and change when we reach our final spot. Fabric tip: If you’re packing your dress in a backpack, look for materials that travel well — polyester, rayon, spandex, nylon, viscose, or synthetic blends. Natural fibers like wool and cashmere (especially blended with synthetics) also resist wrinkles and wear beautifully in the wind.
Pro tip: Buy that new hiking outfit you’ve been eyeing, wear it a few times to break it in, and let’s shoot along the trail too! You’re already making memories — let’s capture that part of the story too.
Mountain Bike Sessions
Moab is an international mountain biking destination and that is why you are here — so heck yes, let’s include bikes in your session! As a former mountain bike guide, these are some of my personal favorite sessions to shoot.
We usually start in your fancier outfit (gotta keep the hair looking good ), and then switch into biking mode for action shots as the sun starts to dip. I’ll help plan the transition so it flows naturally and feels like you the whole time.
Some of my favorite spots for biking sessions:
The Brand Trails are a go-to — with a combination of towering red rock cliffs and sweeping desert views, these trails offer a mix of scenic backdrops, and flowy and technical singletrack that photograph beautifully.
Over at Dead Horse Point State Park, the views are straight-up jaw-dropping, a perfect spot for a playful, scenic ride. (And yes, I have permits for photo sessions and biking here!)
If you're craving a little more “ROCK”, there's always the legendary Slickrock Trail. It's advanced, it's iconic, and it's a classic Moab vibe!
What to Wear for Biking, Canyoneering, or Other Moab Adventures
You’ve got your mountain bike / biking / canyoneering adventure planned, now it’s time to think about what to wear! Here’s what I tell all my couples:
Option 1: Treat Yourself to a New Outfit
You’re coming all the way to Moab — it’s a big trip, and you’re doing something rad together. Why not show up feeling fresh and photo-ready?Hit your local gear shop for a new jersey, hiking kit, or comfy adventure outfit. You’ll think of this trip every time you wear it again.
Option 2: Support Local & Shop Moab
Didn’t grab something before your trip? No worries — Moab has awesome outdoor shops where you can find something last minute:
Pagan Mountaineering – small but well-curated
Gear Traders – thrift-style gold
GearHeads – a Moab staple for outdoor lovers
Option 3: Shop Your Closet
If new gear isn’t your thing, no stress. Take an evening, pull out your favorites, and find outfits that complement each other—color-wise, style-wise, or just energy-wise. Think about the whole session, not just one “look,” and make sure it reflects your vibe as a couple.
What Makes an "Adventure Outfit?"
If you’re planning a hike-in, bike-out, or full-send desert session, think about what keeps you safe. It’s not just about the vibe—it’s about staying comfortable, protected, and free to explore every wild moment. This is what makes up an adventure outfit!
Here’s what goes into a great adventure-ready outfit:
Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes: Yep, the ones you are bringing to Moab!
A Hat You Love: Whether it’s a wide-brim sun hat or a trusty bucket hat, you can get serious style points and they both say “adventure!”
Hydration Pack or Daypack: Staying hydrated is non-negotiable in Moab. A small pack can also hold your snacks, sunscreen, extra layers, or even a second outfit. We’ll take breaks to drink water and soak in the views. Trust me, it makes the whole experience better, and again, it says “ADVENTURE!”
Wear what you hike in! Your favorite trail clothes are already adventure-tested, so bring what you know and love. Go for lightweight, breathable fabrics that dry quickly, and add layers you can easily toss on or off as the temperature shifts. Comfort is everything. You should be able to move, laugh, scramble, and snuggle without a second thought.
Bandana: Cute and versatile! Wet it with cold water to cool off your neck, tie it for sun protection, and for use it is a cute accessory. Desert-tested, trail-approved, and full of personality.
Water Bottle with all those stickers: for a fun prop and again, water makes every experience better!
Whether you're pedaling slickrock, dropping into grand staff canyon, or walking hand-in-hand through sandstone fins of Devils Garden in Arches National Park, I’ll help you plan outfits that celebrate both your connection and the adventure you're sharing.
Desert-Ready Outfit Tips
Here are your 4 simple tips for putting together outfits that "wow" factor while staying practical:

1. Movement is Everything
We’ll be hiking, exploring, maybe sitting on sandstone or dancing on a cliff. Choose outfits you can move, twirl, sit, jump, and cuddle in.
Flowy dresses or skirts catch the breeze beautifully.
Layered outfits add texture and can be peeled off or added back depending on the temps.
Make sure nothing's too tight or stiff—you want to feel free.
2. Shoes Made for the Desert
This isn’t just a photo session—it’s a little adventure. You’ll want shoes that can handle it.
Start with hiking boots or trail shoes for the walk in. We might be on slickrock, sand, or uneven ground.
Grippy sandals (think Tevas, Chacos, or Bedrocks) work great too, especially if it’s warmer out.
Once we get to our final spot, feel free to kick off your shoes and go barefoot—there’s something magical about feeling the warm sandstone under your feet as the sun sets.
3. Desert Colors That Shine

Moab’s red rock glows like fire at sunset — so the right color palette can really pop.
Try these desert-loving tones:
Rust, terracotta, mustard
Sage, olive, deep forest green
Dusty pinks, muted purples, denim blue
Creams, tans, sand, ivory
Jewel tones like sapphire or burgundy also add drama against the rocks
Patterns: Stick with minimal prints or textures that won’t distract from your faces or the scenery.
Accessories: Hats? YES if it’s your thing. Statement earrings or layered jewelry? Do it. Scarves or bandanas? Absolutely.
4. Weather Wisdom

Moab’s desert weather can be a little dramatic, especially in spring and fall. Sunshine, wind, and the occasional surprise cold snap all like to make an appearance (sometimes in the same day).
Here’s how to stay comfortable and photo-ready, no matter what the desert throws our way:
Start with sunscreen. Use it in the days leading up to your shoot—your skin will thank you, and you'll feel way more confident in your photos.
Bring a layer you love—something that adds to your look, not just covers it up. Think a cozy shawl, textured jacket, or a favorite flannel that fits your vibe.
Wind happens! Flowing fabrics and loose hair look amazing in motion, but if you’re not into the full windblown look, bring a hair tie, wear a braid, or style it up and out of your face.
Cold desert day? No problem. Style your layers—thermals under a dress, fleece-lined tights, or a rad coat that still feels like you.
We’ll check the forecast before your session, of course—but having a few flexible pieces on hand means you’ll be ready for whatever desert magic (or mischief) shows up.
What About Hair & Makeup?
You totally don’t need to have your hair or makeup professionally done… but if you want to treat yourself, it’s a fun way to get in the celebratory spirit.
We’ve got some awesome local artists in Moab who can do anything from boho-natural to glammed-up goddess. Whether you’re after a polished look or a soft glow with a little desert dust in your hair (which happens anyway — trust me), I’m happy to connect you with local pros.
Considering an Outfit Change?
Heck yes, you can do a second outfit! Want one look that’s casual and comfy, then another that’s more dressy and dramatic? Perfect.
We’ll talk about what makes the most sense depending on our location. Sometimes there’s a bathroom, sometimes there’s a hidden spot behind a rock. (Moab has a lot of rocks. You’ll be fine.)
Bring everything in a tote or small daypack—we’ll make it fun, I promise.
Moab Shopping Spots for Last-Minute Magic
If your suitcase was a little underwhelming (hey, no judgment!), Moab has a few gems where you can find that just right outfit:
Eclectic, upscale, and full of desert-chic vibes. The perfect spot to find something unique for your session—especially for the ladies.
Locally designed and screen-printed clothing, inspired by Moab's wild heart. Think stylish, sustainable, and super comfortable. Great for both men and women.
If you’re leaning full adventure mode, grab performance clothing or trail-ready gear here. Bonus: they have a used gear trader section, too.
Before You Pack It...
Try your outfit on at home. See how it feels. Can you hug in it? Sit comfortably? Spin around without flashing anyone? Take a few selfies, or heck — send them my way if you want a second opinion. I love helping with styling!

Moab Outfit Quick Tips:
Here's a quick cheat-sheet for choosing your Moab adventure photo session outfit:
Choose movement-friendly clothes
