Rain or Shine: Jake + Cecilie’s Sunset Moab Bridal Session Adventure

Do we cancel if your Moab bridal session forecast looks iffy? Nope! We pivot and embrace the adventure.

Rainy Weather in Moab? Let’s Talk.

If you’re planning a Moab bridal session, elopement, or couples adventure session, you’ve probably peeked at the weather and thought:

“Wait, what if it rains?”

“Will we still shoot if it’s cloudy?”

“Is it worth waking up for sunrise if there’s a storm rolling through?”

“Does it even rain in the desert?!?”

Absolutely!

Moab might be a desert, but quick storms, surprise rain showers, and moody skies can roll through any time of year. And here’s what that means:

  • We shoot rain or shine.

  • Weather makes for epic photos.

  • I only book one session a day so I can flex with your timeline if needed, swapping sunrise for sunset, or shifting locations to chase the light.

That’s exactly what happened with Jake and Cecilie. These two are the perfect example of how weather can become part of your story, not a reason to stop it.

Their Story

Jake and Cecilie met at a beach bar in Florida (classic meet-cute energy ✨) - a Virginia girl and a Jersey guy crossing paths in the sand. Three years of laughter, road trips, and hiking trails later, Jake proposed back in Florida, and these two decided to elope with a small mountain wedding at Whispering Oaks Ranch in Moab with just a few friends.

Instead of booking a photographer for their actual wedding day, they opted for a sunset bridal session the day after, prioritizing adventure photos in the red rock desert that reflected their spirit.

The Pivot: Chasing Sunset at Dead Horse Point

We originally planned a hike-in location for their session, but when the weather started shifting, we pivoted to a drive-up session at Dead Horse Point State Park.

As a seasoned Moab photographer, I have a special love for Dead Horse Point. It’s the place I’ve

photographed most often in my 11 years here, and it always delivers. The view is a unique glimpse into Canyonlands National Park, with deep canyons, winding rivers, and endless skies that create a feeling of smallness… in the best way.

And let me tell you, storm clouds in Moab glow at sunset in a way you can’t replicate on a clear day.

Back to Jake and Cecile. When we saw rain pop up in the forecast, we made the most of their rainy bridal photoshoot.

Cecilie kicked off her shoes to go barefoot on the red rock, umbrellas in hand, laughing as the breeze tugged at her dress. Then she and her new husband danced on the edge of the canyon, rain misting around them, while the sky stayed misty and soft. Layers of gray and blue shifted quietly around them, turning a stormy forecast into a calm, unforgettable memory.

Why Weather Makes Photos Better

  • Cloudy? No harsh shadows, colors pop, and you can cuddle in close without squinting.

  • Windy? Your hair and dress catch the wind, adding movement and drama.

  • Rainy? Desert rain can clear in minutes, leaving puddles for reflections and the scent of wet sage.

  • Stormy skies? The textures of clouds add depth and emotion to your images.

If weather changes the original plan, I’ll always work with you to adjust timing or locations, ensuring you still get beautiful, meaningful images without stress.

How to Be Prepared for Your Moab Bridal Session (Rain or Shine!)

One of the best parts about a Moab bridal session is embracing the adventure. A little preparation helps you do it stress-free!

Here’s how we keep it fun, functional, and flexible:

  • Layers, always. Yes, even in July. Desert weather changes fast. One moment it’s blazing, the next a breeze rolls in and you’re chilly on the rim. Bring a cute jacket, flannel, or shawl that matches your outfit. If you don’t need your puffy, it doubles as a travel pillow for your post-adventure nap.

  • Hand warmers + practical props. I keep rechargeable hand warmers in my pack to tuck into your hands or pockets if temps drop. Props like umbrellas can be cute and functional — they add personality to your images while keeping you dry if a quick sprinkle passes through.

  • Leggings under your dress. Trust me on this one. If the breeze kicks up or the temps dip, you’ll stay warm and comfortable while still looking beautiful, whether you’re barefoot on the rim or hiking to a secret overlook.

  • Footwear flexibility. Hiking boots, Tevas, or barefoot—be ready for a mix. You can wear boots for the walk out and kick them off when we’re settled on the red rock for barefoot dancing, even in the rain.

  • Ask me anything. After 11 years as a Moab Local and 6 years as a Moab Photographer, I’ve seen every weather pattern and have scouted countless hidden spots. Check the weather, be prepared, and use me as your guide — I promise, there are no silly questions.

Because when you come to Moab, the best thing you can pack is your sense of adventure!

Why You May Want a Moab Bridal Session After Your Wedding

ree

Jake and Cecilie wanted to be fully present with their few out-of-town guests during their small Whispering Oaks ceremony. But they also wanted photos that captured their adventurous spirit against the vast desert backdrop.

Your wedding day might be about your loved ones. Your Moab bridal session is about you.

If you’re thinking of skipping photography on your elopement day, consider this:

  • Your wedding day energy is unique — having photos with guests and details can still matter.

  • A separate bridal session lets you focus on adventure without a timeline.

  • Or do both! Have me capture your intimate ceremony and your adventure session for a complete story.
